We love to watch rich people behaving badly. And its not like these are the first serials to depict the lives of the rich and famous. They follow in the diamond and blood encrusted footsteps of Dynasty, Dallas, Peyton Place, 90210, Gossip Girl, Billions, etc., Heck, Tom Wolfe made a career (and entire vernacular) out of exposing the underbelly of yuppie narcissism.But with these shows, a part of us thinks, People cant really be this bad, can they? This is for entertainment. Are rich people really this immoral? Well, according to recent research and if you just watch the news (hello Paul Manafort trial), these dramas and ur gage on the wealthy may not be that far off.Dacher Keltner, a psychologist at the University of California, Berkeley and Paul Piff who have spent decades studying wealth, power and privilege through a series of experiments. One looked at cars at a busy four-way intersection and found that it was people in the more expensive cars like Mercedes thatwere four times more likely to ignore the right-of-way laws than those driving cheaper and older cars.When Keltner had a researcher pretend to be a pedestrian crossing, guess which cars actually stopped? Yup, the people in the cheaper cars while only half of the expensive cars did.It told us that theres something about wealth and privilege that makes you feel like youre above the law, that allows you to treat others like they dont exist, Keltnertold the Washington Post.Rich people behaving badlyIn an absolutely shocking finding, Keltner and Piff also found that rich people are literally more likely to STEAL CANDY FROM CHILDREN. In an experiment with 129 subjects, they had them compare their finances to people had mor e or less money. Then they have them a candy jar that was going to be given to children in a neighboring lab but they could take some if they liked. The subjects that were categorically richer than the people they were compared to took more candy for themselves then those were poorer. To researchers who study wealth and power, its dismaying but not surprising because it tracks so closely with our findings. The effect of power is sadly one of the most reliable laws of human behavior, said Keltner.Past studies have also shown that the wealthy are more likely to cheat on their taxes and romantic partners.These studies do make the rich look very culpable but do keep in mind that they are small sets of the wealthy and some of this people could have had immoral and jerk-like tendencies before they acquired wealth.Robert Gore, Ph.D., an associate professor of psychology at Alliant International University, in San Francisco, said when Piff and Keltners study came out that studies linking cl ass and ethics are hard to make conclusive. Not everyone who is coded as relatively high social class drives a luxury car, Gore said to CNN. Luxury car drivers are a subset of the well-to-do, and we all know people who drive cars they cant really afford. He added, This study really shows that people who identify as a higher social class are more likely to admit unethical behavior. Its not clear whether they actually behave worse or just claim to.However, Piff noted that they conducted several experiments and they all had similar results and factors including age, sex, ethnicity, and religious and political affiliations, which can impact ethics and morals, were accounted for.

Not only is it good for your overall wellbeing, but it’s good for your heart, new research says.“What we found is that people who vacation more frequently in the past 12 months have a lowered risk for metabolic syndrome and metabolic symptoms,” said study co-author Bryce Hruska, a professor at Syracuse University, in a release. “Metabolic syndrome is a collection of risk factors for cardiovascular disease. If you have more of them, you are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease. The 2016 Administrative Law Judge Announcement (https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/433604700) may have closed, but 10-point Veterans may still apply. Pursuant to 5 CFR 332.311, “a 10-point preference eligible is entitled to file an application at any time for an examination for any position for which OPM maintains a register, for which a register is about to be established, or for which a nontemporary appointment was made in the preceding three years. For the purposes of this paragraph OPM shall hold an examination not later than the quarterly period succeeding that in which the application is filed.” In other words, the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Program Office, which administers the ALJ exam, continues to do so on a quarterly basis so that 10-point preference eligibles can apply.  If you are a 10-point preference Veteran who is interested in applying for the closed ALJ examination, The Resume Place can help. Whether your company is swamped with so many resumes for every open position that no one can possibly review them all or you spend your days looking at a near empty candidate pool, you can refine your job postings to solve your problem. If you aren’t sure how your job posting goals compare to your recruiting goals, consider the following three common hiring scenarios that you can fix with the perfect job posting. You aren’t getting enough candidates If you receive one perfect candidate for each job post you submit, then youre the model of efficiency and should be applauded. However, this is rarely the case. According to our research, not getting enough candidate response for a job posting is the most common problem companies face when they begin recruiting.   If your current job posting isn’t performing, first start with keyword and SEO adjustments to get more eyes on the page. If possible, compare how often your posting showed up in search results to how often it was viewed. Speak the language of the job seeker to make sure potential employees understand whether or not this position would be a good fit for them. Review the job posting to make sure you have explained how candidates will contribute to the company, and describe your company in a way that makes it sound like it is worth contributing to. You’re getting too many candidates If you aren’t getting enough response from your job posting, this particular problem might sound like a blessing. But imagine if you posted a job listing and immediately received hundreds of responses. You would need several hours to sort through the resumes and cover letters and make a long list of potential interviews, all without the guarantee that the perfect candidate is waiting at the end of the interview round. If you’re getting too many candidates from your job posting, it’s worth editing your posting to be more specific about the job itself, the company, the industry and the requirements. Start by adjusting the requirements to eliminate the largest number of candidates, then refine the rest of the list until the flow of candidates slows to something reasonable. You’re getting unqualified candidates If you’re getting a large number of candidates and all of them appear to be decidedly unqualified for the position, it’s a clear sign that your job posting is too vague about the minimum requirements of the job. In this situation you’d want to edit the position requirements to be more clear and review the preferred skills and education to see if you should upgrade them to true requirements to cut down on the unqualified candidates who are applying. You may also want to review the job title and introductory paragraph to see if there is anything that might encourage an unqualified candidate to click and submit their resume when it’s so clear that they are not qualified for the position. Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB) Testing Defense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB) Testing There are several jobs in the military which require fluency  in a foreign language. DOD uses two primary tests  to determine whether or not someone can obtain one of these jobs. The first test is the Defense Language Proficiency Test (DLPT). This test is designed for individuals who are already fluent in a specific foreign language  needed by the military. Quite simply, it tests the individuals current knowledge of a specific language. The test results in a ?language  proficiency rating of 0, 0 1, 1, 2, 2, or 3, with three being the highest. The newest version of the DLPT (version V) measures language ability on a scale of 0 through 5, but it will be a few years before this version is available for all tested languages. The version of the test commonly given at locations other than the Defense Language Institue  measures only reading and listening ability. However, most people trying to obtain a job  which requires foreign language proficiency, are not currently fluent in a needed language. In that case, DOD  uses the Defense Language Aptitude Battery (or DLAB) to measure ones aptitude to learn a foreign ?language. Studying for the DLAB Many people ask if one can study for the DLAB, or if there are any study guides available. The answers are yes and no.? There are no commercial study guides available for the DLAB, and one cannot study for the DLAB in the traditional way, as the DLAB is designed to measure language-learning potential, not current knowledge. While one cannot study specific practice questions for the DLAB, one can study grammar and English textbooks to ensure they have a solid grasp of English grammar before taking the test. As a current Army Linguist puts it: ...in preparation for the DLAB, one can help themselves greatly by ensuring that they have a solid grasp of grammar and syntax in general. One who doesnt know what an adjective is will have serious problems with the DLAB. According to individuals who have taken (and passed) the DLAB, one can improve their scores by: Having a very clear understanding of English grammar. You will need to know all parts of speech and how they work. You may wish to get your hands on a good college level grammar textbook and study that for a while before taking the test. Understand how English sentences are constructed (i.e. Subject-Verb-Object). Fooling around with this construction will help you on the DLAB.Be able to recognize accentuation and stress patterns in words. Know where syllable breaks are in words.Have some experience with a foreign language. If you want to be a Russian linguist, it is not necessary that you have experience with Russian. However, if you have some experience with a foreign language, it will help you to understand that different languages use sentence structures differently than English. Be prepared to interpret instructions based on pictures. For example, a picture of a red car is presented with the word ZEEZOOM. Next, a picture of a blue car is presented with the word KEEZOOM. Next, a picture of a red bus is presented with the word ZEEBOOM. You must be able to give the foreign word for a blue bus.You should also know that on the audio portion of the exam there is no repetition of the questions. Once an item is given there is a brief pause for you to answer and then the next question. Be prepared for this; if you think you can think your way into an answer to any given question you will miss the beginning of the next. This effect can snowball and probably leads to some people with good chances going south due to nerves. Listen carefully and go with your gut. Be ready for the next question. Qualifying Scores The DLAB consists of 126 multiple choice questions. Applicable service policies require that each candidate for attendance at the Defense Language Institute be a high school graduate. For admission to a Basic Language Program, the following minimum DLAB scores are required: 85 for a Category I language (Dutch, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish)90 for a Category II language (German)95 for a Category III language (Belorussian, Czech, Greek, Hebrew, Persian, Polish, Russian, Serbian/Croatian, Slovak, Tagalog [Filipino], Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese)100 for a Category IV language (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) Individual services or agencies may demand higher qualifying scores, at their discretion. For example, the Air Force and Marine Corps require a minimum score of 100 on the DLAB for all languages, although the Marine Corps will waiver it to a 90 for Cat I and II languages. The Air Force is not currently approving waivers. The highest possible score on the DLAB is 176. Re-Tests Individuals who fail to achieve a qualifying score on the DLAB can apply to re-test after six months. Requests for re-tests by individuals who have already made a minimum qualifying score are approved only based on documented military necessity, and must be approved by the appropriate commander (ie, recruiting squadron commander). Taking the Test The test is divided into two major segments (one audio and one visual). Audio Segment:  The first part of the audio segment tests your ability to recognize stress patterns in words. The narrator on the audio tape will pronounce four words. One of the words pronounced will have a different  stress pattern. Your task is to indicate (on your answer sheet) the word which is stressed differently from the rest. For example, the narrator would state A - Navy......B - Army.......C - Burger......D - Replace, stressing the second syllable in the word, Replace). The next part of the audio segment begins to introduce rules to a modified English language (created for the sole purpose of the test). You may be told that the rules of this language consist of all nouns preceded by verbs, and nouns and verbs will always end in the same vowel sound. You would then translate a given English phrase into a phrase compatible with the modified language. For example, you may be shown the phrase The dog Runs,  followed by four choices: A-Runsie, The dogie; B-The dogie  runsie; C-Runie  the  dogo; D-The  dogo  runa. Of course, A would be the correct answer because the verb precedes the noun and both end in the same vowel sound. The test will then proceed over several sections, in each section adding a few more made-up rules, covering areas such as how to express possession, or how to express a noun acting on another noun with a verb. Add in the fact that so many of us are burdened with debt and that we are technically “successful” in society’s eyes, it is no wonder we genuinely feel stuck.But the hard truth is that we are spending 60-70% of our lives doing something we actually hate because we believe that’s what we have to do. Our health suffers, our families suffer, our friendships suffer and, yet, we push on because the fear of the unknown keeps us in the miserable.I get it. I was there too. I nearly flipped over the table when my husband casually suggested that I should find a job in a different field if I was unhappy. What?! The nerve.But he was right.
